This article barely touches on some aspects of wiki administration.

How do I post a message that appears on all the pages?

Edit MediaWiki:Sitenotice.

How do I know what version of the wiki software we're running and whether any extensions are installed?

Use the Special pages link in the toolbox and select Special:Version.
